the Cuts
Here is an
assortment of reviews for your consideration. These are all projects
that represent the
more spiritual
side of music, and can transcend all genres to truly be a universal language.
Please support these artists by purchasing their albums and attending their live performances!
"Stereo Sushi 2"
(Hed Kandi) Stereo Sushi is the new label from Hed Kandi, the label that has created its own market of independently licensed house and lounge tracks and marketed it to the masses (bravo!). |
This particular compilation includes some of
the hottest tracks out at the moment, including "Saturday Experience" by
Jody Watley, "Breaking Down" by Ananda Project, "Change For Me" by Erro
and even the coveted Spen & Karizma mix of Angie Stone's "Brotha".
It's mixed straight through by Hed Kandi's own Mark Doyle in a seamless, subtely progressive yet sexy style and features great vocals and fantastic grooves. |
"Back To Love 3" |
Featuring such choice cuts as "Your Love" by Frankie Knuckles & Jamie Principle, "Break 4 Love" by Raze, "Too Blind To See It" by Kim Sims, "Let It Roll" by Doug Lazy and "Respect" by Adeva, this 2-disc, unmixed compilation has a total of 24 full-length club mixes that even the pickiest of music afficionados couldn't argue with. |
"After the Playboy
Mansion"
compiled by Dimitri from Paris (Astralwerks/Virgin France) This is one of the best compilations I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. A two-disc set continually mixed by the new master of downtempo, Dimitri from Paris, this set features some of the most sexy, deep and soulful house as well as obscure remixes and under-appreciated gems from the glorious history of "club" music. Included in this comp: Danny Tenaglia's utterly stunning remix of "Feel Up" by Grace Jones, TS Monk "Candidate for Love", the Blaze Shelter mix of Linda Clifford's anthem "Changin", "Nyce & Slo" from Lil Louis' freshman album, and "Can't Give You Up" by the fabulous Deep Sensation.

"Choice"
compiled by Frankie Knuckles (Azuli) Azuli has titled this compilation appropriately, as almost every single track is "Choice"! Includes: "One of those nights" - Billy Ocean, "This Thing Called Love" - Alexander O'Neal, "What You Need" - Soft House Company, and LOTSn LOTS more. Definitely a "must have" for any serious club junkie or Knuckle-head. |

"Release" - Ananda Project (King Street) Nitegrooves does it again with DJ/Remixer/Producer Chris Brann (Wamdue/P'Taah). A gorgeous work combining live accoustic instrumentation & vocals with top-notch electronic soundz. DJs have been playing selections from "Release" for two and a half years and still get great responses every time! |
"Deeper" volume 1
(Hed Kandi) Compiled by Mark Doyle, this 2 CD compilation is one of the best of the year. Included are the Kings of Tomorrow anthem "Finally", Naked Music's deep, soulful "Always" featuring Lisa Shaw, the dance floor filler "No More Excuses" by Atlantis feat.Naomi Nsombi, Matty Heilbronn's amazing "Arriba, Abajo", and "Quiet Nights" by Andy Caldwell feat. Gina Rene. Be sure to check out the other Hed Kandi compilations, as they are proving to be an excellent source for compiled soundz of the underground. |

"Ministry of Sound
- Sessions Five"
mixed by Masters at Work (Ministry of Sound) Although this came out circa 1995, it remains legendary to this day! Featuring hard-to-find remixes of Jodeci (Freak 'n U) and Michael Watford (Love Changeover), Black Science Orchestra, Barbara Tucker, and MAW's own KenLou tracks, this is definitely a bangin 2 CD compilation. |
"Back to Mine" - selected
by
Everything but the Girl (Ben Watt/Tracey Thorn) (DMC) Although the entire "Back to Mine" series has been fabulous, this particular CD, with selections by Everything But The Girl's Ben & Tracey, absolutely turned it out! Not only were the fantastic"Cascades of Colour" by Ananda Project and "Stars All Seem to Weep" by Beth Orton included, but they had the NERVE to close with the CLASSIC Donnie Hathaway - "Someday We'll All Be Free". There ... are .. no . words .. |

Arnold Jarvis : The
Collection
(Music For Lifetime) For a unique perspective on the history of house music, be sure to pick up 'The Collection' by legendary house vocalist Arnold Jarvis. This man was part of the very beginnings of house music, with his hit 'Take Some Time Out' setting new standards in both production quality and lyrical depth. This is the full collection of Arnold's work, including monumental masterpieces like 'Inspiration' produced by Kerri Chandler, 'Learn to Give' produced by Eric Kupper, and the stunning 'Life Goes On' produced by Masters at Work. If you pick this album up, you'll understand true house music. Arnold's inspirational vocals and vibrant lyrics truly stand the test of time, each song its own unique entity. The album also includes three new tracks destined to become classics. Definitely a must-have. |
"Who is Jill Scott?" by Jill Scott (Hidden Beach/Epic) EVERYBODY should know who the incomparable Jill
Scott is, whose debut CD 'Who is Jill Scott?' garnered 3 Grammy Nominations,
and whose live concert double-CD 'Jill Scott: The Experience' is one of
the best live recordings released in the last ten years. Lead by sultry
balladry and gritty lyrics, 'Slowly, Surely', 'A Long Walk' and 'He Loves
Me' deserve a permanent spot in everybody's CD carousel. This diva blends
spoken word with jazzy hooks, dynamic vocal interpretations and, most importantly,
soulful sensibilities that

Jill Scott Live : "The Experience" (Hidden Beach/Epic) A fabulous collage of her concert series, the
CD lives up to its name - it is quite "the Experience"! Having caught the
show live last year at Radio City, listening to this cd serves as both
a reminder of Jill's amazing talents and a documentary of one of the most

4 Hero : "Creating
Patterns"
(Mercury) 4 Hero's album 'Creating Patterns' also features Jill Scott's vocal stylings (along with her spoken-word soul sister Ursula Rucker and the legendary Terry Callier, among others). 4 Hero initially came on the scene with a series of productions & remixes that danced the fine line between house and drum & bass. This album is more soulful and song-driven, but doesn't lose sight of the balance between electronic & organic musical textures. |
